Supporting families every step of the way: The childbirth journey at CHRISTUS Health in New Braunfels

Supporting families every step of the way: The childbirth journey at CHRISTUS Health in New Braunfels

Sponsored by: CHRISTUS Health - New Braunfels

Childbirth can be one of life’s most significant milestones. At CHRISTUS Health in New Braunfels, families are supported with services designed to make their experience as smooth and personalized as possible. Their team of experts is dedicated to supporting patients before, during and after delivery, ensuring they feel confident and cared for every step of the way.

“We strive to make every childbirth experience empowering and memorable,” hospital President Genifer Rucker said. “From prenatal classes to home visits after delivery, we offer a range of services designed with patients’ needs in mind.”

Expecting parents can attend classes around preparing for labor, pain management and newborn care, including CHRISTUS Health’s unique “Big Brother, Big Sister” program. These classes not only equip parents with the tools they need to navigate childbirth, but also foster a sense of connection and readiness for the entire family. Older siblings, in particular, have a chance to learn how to embrace their new role in the family dynamic.

“I love teaching kids about their new sibling and helping them understand how they can support their mom and care for the baby, and more so, the reward of running into patients in the community and hearing how much our care meant to them,” Clinical Director Anna Akin said.

Once families return home, care doesn’t stop. A nurse visit within two weeks offers an essential safety net, ensuring mothers and babies are adjusting well to their new routines. These visits provide personalized attention, whether it’s answering questions, addressing feeding concerns or conducting screenings to support the mother’s mental and physical health. Lactation support, in particular, is a cornerstone of these follow-ups, helping mothers overcome challenges and build confidence in breastfeeding.

As part of their commitment to supporting newborns, CHRISTUS Health partners with the Mother’s Milk Bank of Austin, ensuring that high-risk and premature infants have access to lifesaving donor breast milk. By serving as a drop-off site, they play an important role in connecting generous donors with families in need, making a real difference in the lives of vulnerable infants.

“It means so much to me when I get to deliver a baby and the parent chooses to let me be their family medicine and obstetrics physician,” Dr. Kristyn Mathewson said. “There is nothing like bringing a baby into this world and seeing them grow up and reach new milestones.”

Beyond delivery, their compassionate team of nurses and physicians builds lasting relationships with families, providing ongoing care as children grow. The personalized support and attention patients receive during childbirth often marks the beginning of a long-term partnership with a trusted health care provider dedicated to their well-being.

Whether patients are preparing for their first baby or welcoming another, CHRISTUS Health is there to provide compassionate support and help them navigate every step along the way. The patient’s journey, from start to finish, is always their priority.
