Houston Gastro Institute is a leading healthcare facility specializing in gastrointestinal care. With a patient-centered philosophy, it combines multidisciplinary strategies to provide comprehensive treatments and support for patients on their journey to improved health.

In this Q&A, Dr. Vivian Asamoah, a board-certified gastroenterologist, shares the innovative approaches that define care at Houston Gastro Institute.

What is Houston Gastro Institute?

Dr. Asamoah: We’re a gastroenterology and hepatology practice dedicated to serving the West Houston community. Our mission is to reshape gastroenterology care through multidisciplinary approaches and the integration of both conventional and alternative medicine. By offering state-of-the-art treatments and encouraging patients to take charge of their health, we aim to set a new standard in compassionate, effective care.
What does it mean to take a multidisciplinary approach?

Dr. Asamoah: A multidisciplinary approach involves more than just collaborating with multiple specialists. It’s about understanding how a patient’s lifestyle can impact their symptoms. We explore each patient’s unique life factors, like support systems and stressors, alongside their symptoms. This approach combines the best of conventional and holistic practices, focusing on healing the whole person, not just treating symptoms.

What are conventional and alternative medicines, and why are they essential for overall health?

Dr. Asamoah: Conventional medicine, often guided by large-scale studies, is essential for identifying effective tests and treatments. Yet, it sometimes overlooks complementary approaches like Eastern or holistic medicine, which can be powerful in healing. By blending these practices, we give patients options, helping them find solutions that truly resonate with their needs. We also recognize the critical role of gut health in overall well-being, which is why we launched a Natural Gut Relief Facebook page. This platform offers valuable insights and resources from a gastroenterologist, empowering patients to better understand their digestive health and make informed choices. We provide a supportive environment where patients can explore these choices safely and gain the knowledge necessary to take charge of their health.

Why is providing a safe space for patients to talk openly about their health concerns important?

Dr. Asamoah: Healing starts with trust. We prioritize creating a welcoming space where patients feel comfortable sharing their full story without fear of judgment. I once treated a 78-year-old patient who had seen several specialists without finding relief. Approaching her with fresh eyes, I discovered undiagnosed celiac disease—a condition that profoundly changed her quality of life once addressed. This experience underscores how trust and attentive listening can lead to life-changing outcomes for our patients to trust their doctors. Many patients feel dismissed and carry mistrust from past experiences. Building that trust is essential for effective health care. When patients feel safe to share their concerns, it leads to accurate diagnoses and meaningful solutions. Ultimately, it’s about helping patients reclaim their lives.

What is unique about Houston Gastro Institute?

Dr. Asamoah: Our goal is to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where we don’t just accept previous diagnoses—we reassess to ensure we’re uncovering the full picture. We’re also multilingual, offering services in languages like Taiwanese, Mandarin, Spanish, and more, which helps us connect with Houston’s diverse population. For convenience, we offer both telehealth and in-office visits, and our on-site surgery center provides a seamless experience. Recently, we opened a clinical research arm, bringing the latest diagnostic tests and treatments directly to our community.
