Roadwork to upgrade a water line infrastructure project along Landa Street and Elm Street is slated to be completed ahead of schedule in early May.

The details

On Jan. 13, New Braunfels Utilities began upgrading water line infrastructure as part of the Landa and Elm Street Water Line Improvements Project. Anticipated to be finished in early May, the project was largely completed April 3. The only items remaining for the project are the painting of the fire land curb and the hydrant flow test, which should be completed the week of May 5, according to Reagan Peña, NBU director of enterprise communications.

Approximately 500 feet of an 8-inch water line was replaced with a 12-inch line along Landa Street from Landa Park Drive to the bridge at Dry Comal Creek. The project was necessary to improve service reliability and ensuring capacity for future demand, according to a news release.

Zooming in

While the construction was taking place, the right turn lane from Landa Street onto Landa Park Drive was closed. Nighttime lane closures of Landa Park Drive also occurred occasionally between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The lane closure was lifted in March once final paving and striping was complete, Peña said.

The project was originally anticipated to cost approximately $565,599 but came in under budget at $558,674. Peña said NBU officials had two change orders that caused delays, which included minor waterline adjustments due to obstructions within the alignment and existing waterline tie-in locations. The project also had additional pavement work.

What's next?

The infrastructure project, originally slated to be completed by May 31, is now anticipated to be completed in early May.
