The Comal ISD board of trustees approved an increase in prices for child nutrition breakfast and lunch May 15 to meet the U.S. Department of Agriculture, or USDA, requirements.

The lunch and breakfast prices will increase by 10 cents for students in pre-K through 12th grade and 20 cents for adult lunches, according to a board memo sent to Community Impact.

The details

Each year, the USDA provides a formula for school districts to follow to help them create breakfast and lunch prices, according to board documents.

Due to meal reimbursement rates increasing, the requirement for a paid meal has increased as well, according to agenda documents.

Meal reimbursement rates in Texas are funded by the USDA and managed by the Texas Department of Agriculture. Schools and providers receive reimbursements for every meal they serve that meets the correct nutrional guidelines.

CISD has not increased meal prices in several years, so to meet the USDA requirements and allow the program to continue, prices need to be adjusted.

Looking ahead

The price increase will go into effect in the 2025-26 school year, however, it will not affect students on the free lunch program, Communications Specialist Salwa Lanford said in an email to Community Impact.
