The city of Magnolia has been awarded a $200,000 Community Development Block Grant through the Texas General Land Office’s Resilient Communities Program to create a new comprehensive plan and update its unified development code, according to an Aug. 14 news release.

What you need to know

The grant was secured through an application submitted by the Magnolia Economic Development Corp. earlier this year. A comprehensive plan acts as the city’s guiding document and is the blueprint for development, infrastructure investment and land use policies over the coming decades.

According to the release, Magnolia’s current comprehensive plan was adopted in 2013.

“This funding represents a significant step forward for Magnolia,” Rachel Steele, executive director of the Magnolia Economic Development Corp., said in the release. “We’ve wanted to update the 2013 Comp Plan for a while, the EDC Board rolled up their sleeves, worked with city departments to make a grant application and were elated when we received the notice from the GLO”.

What’s next

City staff, the planning commission and the Magnolia EDC will coordinate on the project scope with a goal to issue a request for proposals by late September and begin planning work before the end of the year, per the release. The city plans to offer public input opportunities during the process.
