Per a June 13 news release, The Rotary Club of The Woodlands celebrated its 50th anniversary in May with several events.

“It’s remarkable for any organization to celebrate 50 years, and even more so for The Rotary Club of The Woodlands, which during its life has charted the birth and development of a truly special community,” current club President Denton Florian said.

The details

Starting with the dedication of a time capsule and curating a list of 100 books chosen by members from The Woodlands location of Barnes & Noble, the club also held a special celebration during a luncheon.

The Woodlands Barnes & Noble is promoting reading with a display table highlighting a list of the top 100 books selected by local Rotarians.

In case you missed it

Founded in 1974, the club has grown alongside The Woodlands. On May 19 club members gathered at Tough Elementary School to dedicate a time capsule to commemorate the last five decades. The capsule will be buried by the school’s flagpole.

The impact

The Rotary Club of The Woodlands has partnered with local organizations to impact the community through projects like coordinating mobile food pantries, donating blood, helping seniors, honoring veterans on Veterans Day and mentoring at a local elementary school.

One of its biggest efforts is sponsoring six Interact Clubs at local high schools, including College Park High School, The John Cooper School, Grand Oaks High School, Oak Ridge High School, The Woodlands High School and The Woodlands Christian Academy.

Scholarships are awarded to seniors at each of these high schools and students attending Lone Star College-Montgomery, according to the release.

In addition, the club’s signature project is Rotary House, which provides free housing for up to 90 days to a patient or family in treatment at one of Montgomery County’s hospitals, treatment centers or rehabilitation centers.
