Missouri City officials have added an additional $2.53 million to repair and renovate City Centre following damages from Hurricane Beryl last July.

The gist

The supplemental funding, approved by City Council April 21, will bring the project’s total to nearly $6.11 million. The cost increase is due to contractors finding more damage than initially anticipated, Public Works Director Shashi Kumar said.

Additionally, more restoration work is needed to bring the building to code, as some structural components have reached the end of their life cycle, he said.

Zooming in

The renovations, which were initially approved by council last October, are being completed in three phases to allow the facility to partially reopen as remodeling continues, Kumar said. Before it closed in July, the facility provided dining and event space adjacent to La Quinta Golf Course.

According to agenda documents, phases include:
  • Phase 1: renovate the kitchen, Bluebonnet room and Pro-Shop
  • Phase 2: remodel the second floor and second floor bathroom
  • Phase 3: remodel and expand the bar and restaurant
The city has received nearly $1.3 million in insurance reimbursements, with more possible from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the future, according to agenda documents. The other portion of costs is funded by the city’s general funds.

What else?

The city’s La Quinta Golf Course is also undergoing renovations aimed at addressing drainage issues and enhancing course playability and aesthetics, city officials previously said.

At the April 21 meeting, City Council approved another $2.62 million for a new golf course maintenance facility at the course—bringing the project total to nearly $9.2 million.

The project is being funded by the city’s November 2021 voter-approved bond that funded $85.85 million in projects, including $23.02 million in park projects, Community Impact reported.

Going forward

Phase 1 of City Centre’s construction is slated for completion in May; however, the restaurant will only partially reopen, as construction will continue on its expansion, Kumar said

Phase 2 is expected to be completed in October, while Phase 3 is anticipated to wrap up in January.
