Pearland City Council voted unanimously at its July 28 meeting to award a $1 million contract to Pearland-based MetroCity LLC to add the new turn lanes and make additional roadway improvements.
According to agenda documents, improvements include:
- Traffic signal replacement, including poles, mast arms and signal heads
- Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and curb ramps
- Drainage and utility improvements
How we got here
The intersection is one of the busiest in Pearland, with 55,000 vehicles passing through it per day, according to a Texas Department of Transportation report.
Texas A&M ranked the segment of FM 518 between Hwy. 288 and Hwy. 35 as the 103rd most congested roadway in Texas, with an annual economic loss of $19.3 million from delays, according to city documents.
What else?
The construction will take place between 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., but is expected to have minimal impact on regular traffic flow, Engineering and Public Works Director Lorenzo Wingate said.
Construction will begin in August and end in February, Wingate said.
