City developers could build a lake in Pearland’s Independence Park in 2026.

What you need to know

Pearland City Council voted unanimously at its July 28 meeting to apply for a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Local Parks Grant to build a 5.6-acre lake at Independence Park.



According to city documents, the lake and additional park improvements would include:
  • Fishing dock with adaptive features
  • Accessible kayak launch
  • Nature trails and educational signage
  • Habitat restoration and bird islands
  • Lighting and parking upgrades
The project is estimated to cost $750,000, with a 50% match coming from 2023 voter-approved bonds under the Independence Park redevelopment plan, according to city documents.


Looking ahead

TPWD will announce grant winners in January. Construction on the lake would start in November 2026 and is expected to be completed by March 2029, according to city documents.
