Friendswood ISD’s board of trustees called for a $163 million bond at its Aug. 11 meeting.

The measure, which was approved unanimously, means the bond will appear on the November ballot.

On the ballot

The $163 million bond recommendation, which was formed by FISD’s Citizens Advisory Committee earlier this year, is aimed at improving facilities and technology throughout the district, officials said.

The bond package will be broken into four propositions, including:
  • $154.75M for construction of school facilities
  • $4.25M for construction of recreational school facilities
  • $4M for refunding and refinancing the district’s maintenance tax notes
  • $2M for technology upgrades
The bond proposal includes a tax rate increase of $0.13 per $100 valuation of a home for fiscal year 2026-27. This increase translates to an estimated $48.75 per month for homeowners with a taxable value of $450,000, Community Impact previously reported.

This tax rate increase will be updated when the 2025 taxable values are released by the appraisal districts, according to district documents.

It is the first bond the district has called for since 2020, Community Impact previously reported.

How we got here

The CAC met six times from February to April to discuss priorities, take facility tours and curate a recommendation, Community Impact previously reported.

At its final meeting April 22, the CAC recommended a number of projects, including, among others:
  • Adding a Westwood Elementary and Bales Intermediate replacement campus
  • Friendswood High School athletic facility improvements
  • Agricultural center replacement
  • Inclusive playgrounds
Quote of note

“I’d like to thank the Citizens Advisory Committee that went through six to seven meetings to get where we are today,” trustee Tony Hopkins said at the meeting. “I look forward to further educating the community on all these things ... and if passed by the community, I look forward to some really nice facilities for our students.”

What’s next

Early voting for the Nov. 4 election will run from Oct. 20 to Oct. 31, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s Office.

More information on the CAC and recommended projects can be found on the district’s website.
