Ongoing projects
1. FM 1960 widening projects
Project: This Texas Department of Transportation project consists of two segments—A and B—that will widen FM 1960 from a four-lane asphalt roadway to a six-lane divided concrete roadway, as previously reported by Community Impact. The overall project will add a raised median, curb and gutter, channelized left-turn lanes and a five-foot sidewalk on both sides of the road.
Segment A runs from FM 1960 to east of Twigsworth Lane. Segment B continues to the western approach of the McKay Bridge at Lake Houston and also includes the construction of a new bridge that will span over Atascocita Road, West Lake Houston Parkway and Farmingham Road.
Update: Main lane concrete pavement construction in Segment A has been finished said Bambi Hall, a public information officer for TxDOT’s Houston District, via a July 16 email. Remaining work on Segment A includes accessibility improvements and the addition of new traffic signals at all intersections with signals.
Work to be completed along Segment B includes installing three new traffic signals at the intersections of FM 1960 and Atascocita Road, West Lake Houston Parkway and Farmingham Road.
- Construction timeline: Late 2021-late 2025
- Cost: $58.2 million (Segment A); $70 million (Segment B)
- Funding source: TxDOT
Project: The Lake Houston Redevelopment Authority is overseeing construction of the Northpark Drive overpass project—phase 1—and the Northpark Drive reconstruction project—phase 2—said Ralph De Leon, LHRA and Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 10 administrator, in a July 1 email.
Work on phase 1 includes a new overpass over the Union Pacific Corp. railroad tracks and Loop 494 along with westbound and eastbound frontage roads beside the overpass, as previously reported. Additionally, the project will widen Northpark Drive between Hwy. 59 and the overpass.
Phase 2 will expand Northpark Drive from four to six lanes between Woodland Hills Drive and Russell Palmer Road, replace both bridges at the Kingwood Diversion Ditch and the crossing at Ben’s Branch, and install drainage infrastructure along the roadway.
Update: Work is ongoing for phase 1 of this project with progress in July revolving mainly around pouring concrete and completing sidewalks and driveways, according to LHRA’s website. Construction contract bidding for phase 2 is expected to begin in October 2028.
- Construction timeline: April 2023-third or fourth quarter 2026 (Phase 1); October 2028-October 2030 (Phase 2)
- Cost: $149.6 million (both project phases)
- Funding source: City of Houston funds, Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone funding
