Traffic flow changes will be in place this summer at George Bush Intercontinental Airport as part of the Terminal B Transformation Program, Houston Airport System officials announced in a May 12 news release.

What's changing?

Beginning May 14, North Terminal Road will be closed to the traveling public from John F. Kennedy Boulevard to west of Terminal B. This means to access Terminal A, motorists will need to loop around the Houston Airport Marriott at George Bush Intercontinental, travel down South Terminal Road and the proceed back up to North Terminal Road.

The traffic flow changes will be in place through August, per the release.

Keep in mind

Also as part of the Terminal B Transformation Program, the Terminal B lobby temporarily closed Jan. 21 and is expected to reopen in 2026, as previously reported by Community Impact. In the interim, passengers are being redirected through the Terminal C lobby for check-in and can then take the above-ground train to Terminal B, where gates B3-B31 will remain operational throughout the lobby's closure.

With the most recent road closure, Houston Airport System officials noted access to the A/B Parking Garage will remain unchanged. Additionally, United Airlines passengers parking in the A/B Parking Garage can continue using courtesy shuttles to reach Terminal C for check-in.

United Airlines officials recommend passengers arrive two to three hours earlier than departure time.

Some context

The Terminal B Transformation program is a $2.6 billion expansion of the terminal, which broke ground in 2023. According to a Nov. 30, 2023 news release when the project was first announced, the expansion will include:
  • A three-level, 765,000-square-foot Terminal B North Concourse with 22 mainline, narrow-body gates
  • Converting 30 existing small regional jet gates to 18 gates to accommodate larger, two-class regional jets in the Terminal B South Concourse
  • Boarding via jet bridges for all flights
  • Two major concessions hubs with more than 115,000 square feet of food and retail space
  • A new, state-of-the-art baggage handling system equipped with advanced tracking technology
  • The largest United Club in the United Airlines system
  • Expanded curbside and roadway capacity with a ground-level check-in area, including the addition of a traffic bypass between Terminals A and B

As previously reported by Community Impact, construction on Terminal B North is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2026, while work on Terminal B South should wrap up by the first quarter of 2028.
