What you need to know
The meeting will focus on two out of the three proposed improvement segments, with general information available about Segment 3. Participants can expect to receive updates through a presentation and ask questions during the meeting, the release states.
According to the news release, the proposed improvements include:
- Segment 1 (I-610 to Beltway 8 North): reconstruction of main lanes, frontage roads and drainage systems, with improved connectivity between I-45 and Beltway 8
- Segment 2 (I-10 to I610): main lane and frontage road upgrades, including full reconstruction of the I-45/I-610 interchange
The project involves rebuilding the entire downtown Houston freeway loop system and rerouting I-45 from the west side of downtown Houston to run parallel with I-69 and I-10 until it exits downtown and proceeds north, the release states.
According to prior reporting, the project is expected to cost $13 billion.
“The TxDOT I-45 NHHIP addresses not only current population growth but also serves as a foundation for the region’s sustainable development and resiliency,” the release states. “By targeting congestion relief, implementing enhanced safety measures, improving evacuation routes and promoting multimodal transportation options, this project underscores TxDOT’s commitment to the future of the Houston region.”
