A wave of restaurant and business closures has recently hit the Houston Heights and its adjacent neighborhoods in Montrose and River Oaks, with six notable tenants closing in the past 60 days or announcing their impending shutdown.

Ginger & Fork

The neighborhood bistro announced on Facebook July 8 that its final day of service will be Oct. 25. According to the post by the owners, a staffing shortage played a role in the restaurant's imminent closure.

"If you've visited us since 2020, you would know that we never recovered from the staff shortage," the post read. "While we are definitely lucky to have a team that is mighty despite being small, the struggle to cover all of the necessary roles within this operation at the standard that we strive to uphold has been very real."

The spot originally opened along Inker Street in 2016 and offered classic Cantonese and Hong Kong dishes, such as stir-fried lobster tails, pineapple chicken and fried rice.

MF Lobster & Seafood

Located inside Autry Park, the restaurant closed its Houston spot on June 10 after operating for only slightly more than a year. According to Houston Food Finder, Chefs Chris Kinjo and Miguel Alvarez decided to close the concept to focus on their other culinary ventures, which includes Vietnamese restaurant Annam.

The restaurant, which sold lobster rolls, oysters and grilled fish, will be replaced by a new, yet unknown concept by Emmer & Rye. The hospitality group announced on June 12 that it plans to announce more details in late 2025.

Mi Tierra Mexican Kitchen

The owners of the Tex-Mex restaurant located in Oak Forest announced the closure on Facebook June 11.

"This decision did not come easy," the post read. "Mi Tierra was more than just a restaurant—it was a dream, a risk, a labor of love and a huge part of my soul. It was where we poured our passion, culture and our heart into every detail, from the recipes to the guest we welcomed through our doors."

The post did not share a reason for the closure, but owners said they view the closure not as a goodbye, but as a "pause, a redirection."
