As plans for the expansion of the Grand Parkway head toward Galveston and Brazoria counties, officials with the Texas Department of Transportation shared a project overview at a town hall meeting Oct. 23 in League City.

The project

Section B-1, which is a portion of Section B within the Grand Parkway’s expansion project, will stretch from I-45 in League City to south of FM 2403 in Alvin.

The subsection will stretch 14 miles and have four direct connectors at I-45 and two direct connectors at SH 35, TxDOT Construction Management Engineer Kenneth Shirley said.

Construction will impact several roadways in League City, including:
  • Hobbs Road
  • Calder Road
  • FM 646
Section B is a 28-mile, four-lane, controlled access toll road with intermittent frontage roads from I-45 South in League City toward SH 35 in Alvin and on to SH 288 near Rosharon through Galveston and Brazoria counties.

The cost

Section B-1's expansion project will cost $1.96 billion, and will be paid for through toll revenue, Shirley said.

However, prices and dates are subject to change, Shirley said.

Looking ahead

The design process is slated to begin after the contract is finalized in July 2026, with construction on the road starting in 2027, Shirley said.

As construction occurs, Shirley asked drivers to slow down to be mindful of workers.

“When you drive through Calder [Road] ... Hobbs [Road] ... [FM] 646 ... [and] I-45, we’re going to be working day and night, weekdays, weeknights trying to get this done,” Shirley said. “I’m going to ask you to slow down. This is a dangerous work site.”
