In addition, City Council approved a few items at its May 12 meeting related to speed limits and future construction projects.
The gist
Many of the school zone flashers are more than 20 years old, officials said. The new flashers will interact with the WAZE navigation app and the Travel Safely app built into certain vehicles and send drivers alerts when they enter a school zone. It will also notify them if they are speeding.
“This effort will significantly improve driver awareness, enhance student safety and modernize our infrastructure to meet today’s needs,” officials said in a May 14 social media post.
The project is part of the city’s multi-year capital improvement plan. City documents show the project will consist of both replacing the school zone signals as well as installing new pavement markings for school zone crosswalks.
In total, the project over the next five years is expected to cost the city $1.68 million, which comes out to $240,000 each fiscal year starting in FY 2024-25, documents show.
Also of note
League City City Council also approved a new speed limit of 40 mph along Bay Area Boulevard between League City Parkway and Magnolia Greens Lane at its May 13 meeting, according to agenda documents. The stretch of road is a little more than half a mile.
Previously, the road’s speed limit was 30 mph, according to city documents. The road has roughly 2,600 vehicles traveling down it per day.
What else?
The council also approved a contract for the design of various improvements at the Hwy. 96 and FM 270 intersection, and the Hwy. 96 and Columbia Memorial Parkway intersection.
The contract, which went to EHRA Engineering, will not exceed $256,000, according to city documents.
The work at the intersection, once approvals and bids are squared away, will include extending several turn lanes and various other intersection improvements, such as updating mast arm lengths, upgrading curb ramps and restriping.
A timeline on when the design could be ready and construction could begin was not provided.
