The City of McKinney will provide live Christmas tree collection and composting Dec. 26-Jan. 19.

Frontier Waste Solutions will collect Christmas trees and transport them to Living Earth, a green waste recycler and compost manufacturer.

What you need to know

Residents must follow these guidelines to ensure their trees are eligible for collection and composting:
  • Remove lights and ornaments.
  • Do not bag the tree.
  • Leave the tree next to a trash cart on pickup day.
Trees with lights, ornaments, or fake snow are not compostable. They are considered a bulky item, and pickup for bulky item collection must be scheduled separately.

There are two drop-off locations for residents who live in an apartment:
  • Al Ruschhaupt Soccer Fields on Park View Avenue, north of the soccer complex parking entrance
  • Gabe Nesbitt Community Park on Hillsdale Drive, south of the Plano Sports Authority McKinney facility and west of the baseball fields
What else?

Natural decorations such as live poinsettias, pine garland and wreaths can be composted alongside normal yard waste. Poinsettia plants must be taken out of their pots and placed in a brown paper bag, and any lights or ornaments must be removed from garlands and wreaths.
