Erwin Park, located on CR 1006, will close this fall for renovations, McKinney Parks and Recreation Department officials said.
The $10.5 million renovation project includes improved restrooms, a new entrance feature, a new overlook structure, benches and improved trails, department officials said. The new overlook will allow visitors to see over 35 miles from the top deck, Parks and Recreation Director Amy Kinkade said at a mid-2024 McKinney Community Development Corporation meeting. MCDC contributed $5.5 million to the park renovation project, with an additional $3.6 million from parkland dedication funds, Kinkade said.
Erwin Park currently has playgrounds, two restroom facilities, 10 miles of mountain bike trails and a mountain bike skills course, among with other amenities.
Kinkade said the city will start accepting bids for the project in late summer, with the goal to begin renovations this fall. The park is expected to complete renovations in late 2026 or early 2027, but parks officials are aiming to phase the construction to avoid full closure of the park. It's currently too early to tell when the park's last day of operations will be, Kinkade added.
