Counties have released early voting totals for elections, including Northwest ISD’s voter-approved tax rate election, or VATRE.

Early results, which are unofficial until canvassed at a later date, are favorable of a new tax rate. If ultimately approved, the rate would generate about $12 million in additional revenue for the district for the 2025-26 school year.

What you need to know

This is the second consecutive year NISD has called a tax-rate election. This election comes after the district eliminated more than 100 teaching positions and maximized staffing ratios to mitigate a projected $16 million budget shortfall for the 2025-26 school year, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

So far, the VATRE has received 6,723 votes in favor, or about 53.76% of the vote, and 5,783 against, or about 46.24% of the vote, according to unofficial early voting results from Denton, Tarrant and Wise counties.

Totals from ballots cast Nov. 4 have yet to be released. Polls closed at 7 p.m., although voters who were in line at 7 p.m. were still able to cast ballots.

The background

If approved, the district would have a maintenance and operations, or M&O, tax rate of $0.6631 per $100 valuation for the 2025-26 school year. Its interest and sinking, or I&S rate, will remain flat.

The proposed tax increase is higher than what the district approved before the school year began, but is less than the tax rate for the previous year, according to previous reporting.
