Austin-based Base Power, a provider of backup batteries for homes, announced Aug. 19 it selected Grapevine to be its Dallas-Fort Worth base as the company expands its battery-powered home energy model across the metroplex.

What’s happening?

According to a news release from the company, Base Power opened an office and warehouse in Grapevine and hired more than 10 full-time employees locally.

Base Power Head of Growth Cole Jones, who grew up in Dallas-Fort Worth, told Community Impact the company picked Grapevine to be the center point of its DFW operations because of its centralized location in DFW and to the members it wants to serve.

“With every battery added, the community's grid becomes more and more resilient, and it not only protects homes from outages, but it also prevents them,” Jones said. “Coming from Texas and being so close with my neighborhood and my community, I think it's an important aspect to communicate.”

The location is also advantageous for recruiting top talent since it is situated in a region where they can find the best people for their team, he said.

“We've been able to recruit an awesome team. It’s an exciting branch [to add] to our Austin headquarters,” he said.

How it works

Base Power offers backup power options and can lower customers’ monthly energy bills through strengthening the power grid in the area, according to previous reporting. The backup options are powered by batteries and offers three options:
  • A wall mounted 20 kilowatt-hour, or kWh, battery
  • A single ground-mounted 25 kWh battery
  • A dual ground mounted 50 kWh battery
The service costs $695 up front for a 25 kWh battery and $995 for a 50 kWh battery, the company's website states. Clients pay a monthly cost starting at $20 a month after install, according to the website.

“Every battery not only saves the member money it protects their home, but also strengthens the whole grid,” Jones said.

He said clients save 10-15% on average by using Base Power over other power companies and added that customers have more peace of mind knowing that if the power grid goes down, it will not affect Base customers since the backup batteries immediately kick in and keep their power going.

“It's a power outage protection solution for homeowners, and the benefits to them is they get this solution that otherwise costs $10,000-$15,000, if you're looking at backup generators or comparable battery solutions, for a fraction of the cost,” Jones said. “It’s only $700, and the way we can provide this is all through that grid support feature.”

What else?

Base Power customers do not need solar panels since solar does not work if the power grid goes down. However, Base does work with homes that have solar panels already installed.

Jones added that Base Power will handle switching fees for customers who change power providers. While the company only works with residential clients at the moment, execs hope to expand to commercial customers in the future.

Outside of Grapevine, Base Power will provide services to people living in Flower Mound, Plano, Southlake and Richardson.
