Pet Wants Roanoke opened a brick-and-mortar location in Trophy Club.

The gist

Pet Wants, a franchise business based in Cincinnati, specializes in providing fresh, small-batch, slow-cooked natural dog and cat food, natural chews and treats.

Owners Charlie and Cora Baker opened in a location that formerly housed Popcorn Central.

The food does not include corn, wheat, sugar or other fillers, Charlie Baker said. According to the website, high-quality salmon, duck, whitefish, chicken and lamb are used in the food products.

Pet food is sold by the pound, so customers can buy enough for a week or could buy a 40-pound bag, Cora Baker said.

What else?

The Bakers used to sell pet food from their house and at local farmers and artisan markets. Cora Baker said attending those markets helps land customers, as does word of mouth.

The store also has a section for local entrepreneurs, such as Kopi Treats, which are homemade treats. The Lantana-based business run by two sisters, 10-year-old Aubrey and 13-year-old Alexis, according to its website.
