Diving deeper
The Planning and Zoning Commission has four terms expiring on its nine-member board. It acts as an advisory board for City Council, reviewing and making recommendations for zoning ordinances, rezoning, planned unit developments and historic overlay district designations. All regular members of Planning and Zoning serve on the Capital Improvements Advisory Committee, which meets twice a year for reviewing the capital improvement plan.
There are three open positions for the seven-member Transportation and Economic Development Corporation. The corporation promotes economic development in Round Rock and approves agreements that use Type B sales tax funds.
The Historic Preservation Commission makes recommendations for designations of areas as historic districts or landmarks, as well as for partial tax exemptions for historic sites. There are three terms available on the seven-member board.
For the Civil Service Commission, there is one term expiring soon. The commission helps with matters relating to Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code for securing efficient fire departments.
The city will consider candidates for three positions on the seven-member Zoning Board of Adjust, which hears and reviews requests for zoning variances, special exceptions and appeals of zoning decisions or interpretations. Members also serve on the Building Standards Commission.
The Ethics Review Commission meets annually at minimum to review the ethics ordinance and recommend amendments to City Council, if needed. There are four positions expiring on the seven-member board.
What else?
City Council reviews board and commission members each year, as well as appoints new members. Terms for these positions last two years and are staggered, and members may not serve more than eight years consecutively for one board or commission.
Council will make this years appointments at a regularly scheduled meeting in August, with the appointees starting their positions in September.
